Every time your referral collects mined resources, you will be sent 5% of the referral system (сan be increased in the account skills). It absolutely does not matter what faction your referral joined, you will get exactly those coins which he mines.
This only works with NFTs that generate in-game currency. Specifically: Heroes and Tools.
For example: To double your income but make it absolutely passive - you need to invite 20 users with the same sets of NFTs.
